I’ve been sitting on this information for a little while, but it’s finally out, so I can share it: I have a new middle grade novel coming out. Here’s the formal announcement!
This novel was such a blast to write, and I’m absolutely thrilled to have a book coming out with Scholastic. It’s been so amazing to be linked to two publishers who have made such a difference on me as a writer: Penguin’s inexpensive paperbacks taught me so much about world literature, and now Scholastic, whose school book fair was the first place where I bought my own book. That these books were affordable meant I could buy one or more at every book fair. These formed my library as a very young person, and for years.
And now I’ll be having the very kind of story that would have broadened my mind as a kid—but also dragons!!! Like many, I’ve always loved those beasts. And for Skyward, it was such fun to write about a kid and her problematic dragon in world of relationships where humans and dragons are equal players.
I’ll share more in future posts, but I wanted to share this now. I can’t wait for this book to get out into kids’ hands!

That is fabulous news!
Thank you, my friend! It will be so much fun to bring to students again. I’ve deliberately put a lot of things in for discussion. I’ll be sharing more in future posts!
Hi Diane!
Congratulations on the new book deal! I’ve missed connecting with you online. I am so excited for you and our kids who will get to read it.
Tina
Aww, thank you so much! Yes, I am so thrilled that this is coming out, and I have another chance to help kids experience a new adventure with some characters I’ve loved to write (the kids and dragons alike!).
Diane,
I am so excited for you. I can’t wait to read Skyward and put it into the hands of my readers. Congratulations, my friend.
Thank you so much, my friend! It will be so much fun to read these sport match scenes aloud (just like my battle scenes, I found, when I was writing them: the pacing and excitement is so similar!). I may develop an author talk about adventure novels versus sports stories, because so much of it is similar (at least, the way I write it). And the dragons! So much fun to write, and my main CP told me they were among his favorite characters. I hope kids will feel the same way.
